Research Security at Aalborg University
We must protect our research and our employees.

A STRONG SECURITY AND SAFETY CULTURE
Danish universities must contribute to strengthening Denmark's approach to research collaborations with international partners. If research ends up in the wrong hands, it can have significant and harmful consequences. Therefore, it is important to strike the right balance, so that the university and you as a researcher can work as openly as possible and as securely as necessary.
Udvalget om Retningslinjer for internationalt forsknings- og innovationssamarbejde, also known as the URIS guidelines, has established some guidelines that we must follow to ensure that we, as a university, can protect our research and its outcomes.
We are making good progress at Aalborg University in implementing these guidelines and strengthening our approach to international research collaboration. We have already made significant strides in adjusting our procedures and security to ensure that both our research and collaborations comply with the applicable regulations and best practices. This work is crucial to maintaining the integrity of our research and protecting our scientific results from misuse.
A continued effort
But it still requires continuous and extensive effort to build a strong security culture at the university. In order for Aalborg University to remain an attractive partner for collaboration, we must ensure high standards of security and integrity. A strong security culture is essential to protect our research, our employees, our students, and our partners.

Status at Aalborg University
- 1
A risk-based approach
AAU has implemented risk assessments in selected research areas in connection with new international collaborations, guests on research stays, enrolment of PhD students, and recruitment of employees.
- 2
A central security organization
A central security organization has been established to coordinate efforts across the university.
- 3
Mapping of technologies
AAU has initiated mappings of critical technologies and dual-use equipment subject to export control regulations.
- 4
Mapping of critical research
AAU has begun a mapping focused on critical and societally important research. The assessment also includes strategically important data and research results, such as those related to critical infrastructure, which may be vulnerable.
- 5
Special security measures
As the mappings progress, special security measures have been introduced in vulnerable research areas and environments. The measures range from physical security, IT security, special personnel profiles, and screening of external collaboration relationships.
- 6
Focus on the safety of researchers
AAU has initiated initiatives to focus on particularly vulnerable researchers who, due to their research, may be victims of harassment, sabotage, espionage, or personal attacks.
