Student Projects and Ethical Approval
Students do not apply for ethical approval themselves. If a student project may or will be used for research purposes (e.g. publication) together with an AAU researcher/supervisor, the supervisor or the responsible AAU researcher must submit the application before data collection begins.
When should an application be submitted?
An application for ethical approval must be submitted when data collected as part of a student project is expected to be used for research together with an AAU researcher, and before data collection begins. This applies regardless of whether the data will later be anonymised.
Exception:Theoretical articles do not require ethical approval, including when they are prepared in collaboration with students.
What can you consider as a supervisor?
- If you know in advance that the student project may lead to an article with you as a co-author, you must apply for ethical approval before data collection for the student project begins.
- If, after data collection in the student project has taken place, you realise that the data may be used in your research, you must apply for ethical approval on the basis of the use of secondary data.
Please note: the use of these data may require permission from the students as the data owners.
